Just in time for Safer Internet Day 2026, Discord has announced a major update to its platform: Teen-by-Default settings are rolling out globally.

If you’ve been hearing rumors about “mandatory ID verification” or “face scans” on Discord, don’t panic. While safety is getting a huge boost, Discord explains that privacy remains a top priority.

Here is everything you need to know about the new changes, the verification process, and what it means for your account.

What Are “Teen-by-Default” Settings?

Starting in early March 2026, Discord is applying a “teen-appropriate experience” by default to all users. This isn’t just for new accounts; it affects existing ones too.

The goal is to protect younger users from unwanted contact and inappropriate content. If Discord’s systems think you are a teen (or if you are unverified), you will see these changes:

  • Filtered Content: Sensitive media content will be blurred or hidden by default. You cannot turn this off unless you are age-verified as an adult.
  • Restricted DMs: Direct messages from people you don’t know will be routed to a separate inbox or blocked entirely.
  • Friend Request Alerts: You’ll get a warning if you receive a friend request from someone you likely don’t know.
  • Age-Gated Spaces: Access to age-restricted (NSFW) servers and channels is blocked unless you verify your age.

The Verification Process: Do I Have To Scan My Face?

This is the biggest question everyone has. No, you do not have to verify your age just to use Discord.

According to Discord, the “vast majority” of users will continue using the app exactly as they do today without ever being asked to verify.

You will only need to verify if:

  1. You want to access Age-Restricted (18+) servers or channels.
  2. You want to change safety settings that are locked to adults (like unblurring sensitive media).
  3. Discord’s automated systems flag your account as potentially belonging to a minor when you claim to be an adult.

How Verification Works (It’s Safer Than You Think)

If you do need to verify, Discord has partnered with Yoti, a leading digital identity company, to handle the process. Discord offers two main ways to verify:

1. Facial Age Estimation (“Video Selfie”)

This is often the fastest method.

  • How it works: You take a short video selfie in the app.
  • The Tech: Yoti’s AI analyzes facial features (like skin texture) to estimate your age.
  • Privacy: This happens on your device. The video is never sent to Discord, and it is deleted immediately by Yoti after the check. It is not facial recognition (it doesn’t match you to a database).

2. ID Upload

If the selfie option doesn’t work or you prefer not to use it, you can upload a government ID.

  • Privacy: The ID is used only to check your date of birth. Once verified, the image is deleted. Discord only receives a “pass/fail” result and your age group. They do not store your ID.

The “Age Inference Model”

One interesting part of the update is Discord’s “Age Inference Model.”

Instead of asking everyone for ID, Discord runs a background system that looks at user behavior to predict age. If the system is “highly confident” you are an adult based on how you use the platform, you might get access to adult features without needing to scan anything.

However, if your behavior patterns are unclear, or suggest you might be younger, you’ll hit that verification wall before you can enter 18+ spaces.

Summary: What Changing in March?

FeatureNew Default Behavior
Content FiltersOn by default. Can only turn off if verified 18+.
Unknown DMsFiltered/Blocked by default.
18+ ServersInaccessible without age verification (via history or ID).
State ChannelsOnly verified adults can speak on Stage in some communities.

Keeping Your Account Safe

With these new strict settings, keeping your account secure is more important than ever. If you lose access to your account, recovering it—and proving your ownership/age—can be a hassle.

  • Enable 2-Factor Authentication (2FA).
  • Don’t click suspicious links offering “bypass verification tools” (these are scams).
  • Keep your email updated.

Discord’s update is a big step for teen safety, and while the “ID verification” headlines can be scary, the privacy-first approach with partners like Yoti seems to strike a good balance. As long as you aren’t trying to access restricted content as a minor, your day-to-day Discord usage shouldn’t change much!
