Discord Decorations and Nitro Explained
A complete guide to Discord decorations, Nitro, the Discord Shop, and how each decoration type works. Covers what requires Nitro, what you can buy outright, and what is occasionally free.
Discord profiles can look quite different from user to user. Some people have animated effects swirling around their avatar, glowing borders on their profile picture, and custom nameplate backgrounds behind their username. Others have a plain default setup with no visual customization at all.
The difference comes down to Discord Nitro, the Discord Shop, and knowing which decoration type falls into which category. This guide explains all of it clearly.
What Is Discord Nitro?
Discord Nitro is a paid subscription that unlocks premium features across the platform. There are two tiers:
Nitro ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) includes:
- 500 MB file upload limit (vs 25 MB standard)
- HD video streaming up to 1080p 60fps
- Custom emojis and stickers in any server
- Two server boosts
- Animated profile avatar
- Profile banner
- Per-server nickname customization
- Access to Nitro-exclusive Shop items
- Extended message length (4,000 characters)
Nitro Basic ($2.99/month) includes a subset of the above:
- 50 MB file upload limit
- Custom emojis everywhere
- Animated avatar
- HD video at 720p 60fps
- Longer messages
Profile decorations like nameplates and profile effects are exclusive to full Nitro. Nitro Basic does not include them.

What Are Discord Decorations?
Discord decorations are cosmetic items that change how your profile appears to other users. They have no effect on functionality. There are four main types:
Profile Effects
Profile effects are animated visuals that appear on your profile card when another user opens it. Examples include floating sparks, smoke trails, falling petals, or glitch animations.
How to get one: Purchase from the Discord Shop or unlock through limited-time events. Some profile effects are Nitro-exclusive. Others are available for direct purchase with Discord credits regardless of Nitro status. Effects are typically priced around 650 credits (roughly $6.49 USD).
Avatar Decorations
Avatar decorations are frames or borders displayed around your profile picture. They range from simple glowing rings to animated crowns, halos, pixel art frames, and limited-edition seasonal items.
How to get one: Available in the Discord Shop for direct purchase (around 400 to 800 credits), sometimes included in Nitro, or obtainable through limited events. Having Nitro unlocks a wider selection of decorations in the Shop, but many can be bought without it.
Profile Banners
A profile banner is the image displayed as a header behind your username and avatar on the full profile view. It can be a static image or an animated GIF.
How to get one: Animated banners require Nitro. Static banners can be set by any user from their own images. There is no Shop purchase involved for custom banners.
Nameplates
Nameplates are decorative backgrounds that appear behind your username in certain parts of the Discord UI, including your profile card. They add a styled frame or textured background to your display name.
How to get one: Nameplates are available in the Discord Shop and through Nitro. Some are released as limited-time seasonal items.
The Discord Shop Explained
The Discord Shop is the in-app marketplace where decorations and cosmetic items are sold. You can access it through your profile settings or via the Shop icon in the navigation bar.

How Shop purchases work:
- Open Discord and go to your user settings
- Navigate to “Profiles” or click your avatar to open your profile card
- Select “Customize Profile”
- Open the Shop from within the customization panel, or go directly via the crown/shop icon
- Browse available items and select one to preview it on your profile
- Purchase using Discord credits (bought with real money) or Nitro subscription if the item is included
Discord credits are sold in bundles. Prices vary, but a single decoration typically costs between 400 and 800 credits. Credits do not expire.
Creator Shops are a separate category within the Shop where independent creators sell their own animated decorations. These are purchased the same way and work identically to official Discord items.
What Requires Nitro vs What Does Not
This is the part most guides get wrong. Not everything in the Shop requires Nitro.
| Decoration Type | Requires Nitro? | Can Buy Without Nitro? |
|---|---|---|
| Profile Effects | Some do, some do not | Yes, for non-Nitro items |
| Avatar Decorations | Some do, some do not | Yes, for non-Nitro items |
| Animated Profile Banner | Yes | No |
| Static Profile Banner | No | No (use your own image) |
| Nameplates | Some do, some do not | Yes, for non-Nitro items |
| Animated Avatar | Yes (Nitro or Basic) | No |
| Server Emojis Everywhere | Yes | No |
Full Nitro unlocks a broader selection within the Shop and lets you equip Nitro-locked items. If an item is marked “Nitro Exclusive” in the Shop, you need an active Nitro subscription to use it even after purchase.
Limited-Time and Free Decorations
Discord periodically releases decorations that are free or earnable without paying. These come through:
Discord Events: Discord occasionally runs in-app events tied to game launches, seasonal holidays, or platform milestones. Completing event tasks can unlock exclusive decorations not available in the Shop. These are always time-limited.
Discord Quest Rewards: Quests are in-app challenges tied to specific games. Completing a Quest sometimes grants a unique cosmetic reward. These are typically one-time use and tied to the active Quest period.
Game and Platform Partnerships: Discord has partnered with games like Fortnite and platforms to bundle decorations with purchases or in-game achievements. Check the Shop’s “Events” or “Limited” tab for active partnerships.
Free Trials: Discord occasionally runs Nitro trial promotions that give you temporary access to Nitro-locked decorations for the trial period.
The free decoration availability is genuinely unpredictable. Discord does not publish a calendar of upcoming freebies. The best way to catch them is to check the Shop tab periodically or follow Discord’s official blog and social accounts.
Equipping and Managing Decorations
Once you own a decoration, equipping it takes a few seconds:
- Open Discord and go to User Settings
- Select “Profiles”
- Under “Profile Customization,” click “Customize Profile”
- Choose the decoration slot you want to fill (avatar decoration, profile effect, nameplate)
- Select from your owned items and preview the result
- Save changes
Decorations you purchase are tied to your account permanently. They do not expire unless they were granted as part of a time-limited promotion that specified an expiry. Items bought with Discord credits are yours to keep.
Are Decorations Worth Buying?
Decorations are purely cosmetic. They do not affect how Discord functions, do not grant server permissions, and are not visible to users who have not opened your profile card.
If you want to customize how your profile looks to friends and community members, decorations are a clean way to do that. If you do not care about profile appearance, they provide no functional value.
The most cost-effective approach:
- Check the Shop for free event items before spending anything
- Consider Nitro Basic at $2.99 if you mainly want the emoji and upload perks rather than decorations
- Full Nitro at $9.99 makes sense if you actively use server boosts and want the full decoration catalog
- Individual Shop purchases work well if there is one specific item you want without subscribing
